The Comcast Shoot
by Marco Fantone

September 28th saw over a dozen La Grangers participate in an event most of us will not soon forget; the opportunity to work with Lance Armstrong in a photo shoot!

The setting was in Azusa, CA with a one-block stretch of road mocked up to look like the finish line of a race. This included the requisite banner of balloons arcing from one side of the street to the other at the “finish line” as well as metal barricades and at least 100 extras with flags cheering us on.

After an hour of practice runs, the man himself showed up. Lance simply rode up to our group and asked what we were supposed to be doing in a playful sort of way. It was a nice ice-breaker since we were all a bit intimidated by his presence. And so for the next three hours our pack of riders replicated the finish of a race with Lance, arms in the air, just hitting the line ahead of us. He was great to work with. He posed for more pictures than you would have expected from someone at his status level and never once complained about anything. He basically showed up, did the work, and left.

In addition to being able to meet Lance, we were actually getting PAID to do this if you can believe it. It was agreed upon ahead of time that since working with Lance was the real payoff, we would donate any earnings to fellow La Granger John Brazier who continues to recuperate from his accident. In all, over $4600 will be presented to John along with a Lance-signed Graham Watson book and a CD of all of the photos taken during the photo shoot.
